Will My Dog Benefit From Training?

Every dog at every age and level of obedience can benefit from training.  Training provides much needed mental stimulation, and even well behaved dogs are challenged in our intermediate and advanced classes.

It’s also important to recognize that training is a part of the lifestyle, no dog is ever completely trained, good owners train throughout the dog’s life, challenging the dog to provide mental stimulation and to fully unleash the dog’s potential.

We have helped over 1000 owners successfully train their dogs.  Check out our Client Feedback section to see what others have to say about our services.

What Method of Training Do You Use?

We use a variety of methods in our training, incorporating techniques from various schools.  We believe it is more important to teach good behaviours than to correct bad ones.

We do not use correction collars,  and for a number of good reasons. There are several negative implications of using fear or pain to induce a behaviour in dogs. For a comprehensive list of negative implications and for up-to date information please visit http://www.dogwelfarecampaign.org/implications-of-punishment.php.

Do You Only Use Treats?

We use a variety of rewards including treats, pats, praise and life rewards.  Life rewards are activities that dogs find rewarding, including playing with other dogs, smelling and exploring, meeting new people, and playing games. Life rewards are easy to use with our methods and help maintain training in your lifestyle.

We do not believe in using fear or pain to motivate dogs, but that does not mean we are not firm.  We have rules and boundaries, and there are consequences when those rules and boundaries are broken.  There are many ways to punish without using fear or pain.

Do I Need Group Classes or In Home Training?

There are pros and cons to both, and that’s why we offer both Group Courses and In Home Training. Doing one should not negate doing the other, and we find the most effective method to train is a combination of both In Home Training and Group Courses.

In Home Training:

Pros Cons
  • Allows the trainer to better assess the problem behaviours and the possible causes
  • Easily train basic commands with little to no distractions
  • Specifically tailored to suit the needs of the owner

  • Limited distractions
  • Limited space
  • Little to no socialization, for dogs and owners
  • Limited to no equipment (i.e. agility equipment)

Group Training:

Pros Cons
  • Training the dog to listen despite distractions
  • More space, 3000 square feet of specially padded flooring to work on
  • Socialization to new people, new dogs and new environments
  • Both dogs and owners will make new friends
  • Agility equipment to practice on
  • Affordable long term training

  • Less one on one attention
  • Clients need to come to our location
  • In rare cases the distractions can be too challenging, but generally the distractions help to train a more reliable dog

We recommend beginning with an in home consultation, and we can then recommend which training will suit you best.  Generally the most comprehensive training begins in home and then moves to group classes.
