The Four Steps in Dog Training

· Cue: Say the cue word once, followed by the associated hand motion or other technique to show the dog the desired behaviour.

Example of a cue:
________________________________________________________________

· Mark: The moment your dog responds to your cue use your clicker or use consistent verbal praise.

Example of verbal praise:
________________________________________________________________

· Reward: Pats, treats, play, etc. Change the amount, the kind, and the timing (sometimes right away, sometimes pause and then deliver the reward).

Example of reward:
________________________________________________________________

· Release: Consistent word paired with a hand motion to allow your dog to now relax, or go play, or be at ease, or meet a friend etc.

Example of a release word and hand motion:
________________________________________________________________

Premack Principle

In some cases, especially after practicing the basics, the Release becomes the Reward, for example you may ask your dog to sit, and release your dog to allow him/her to go through a door, or to go meet another dog, in this case the release has become the reward. This is called training using the Premack Principle, and this is how training becomes a part of your lifestyle.

We will ask your dog to different behaviours for us, including sitting and staying, and then release your dog to allow your dog to: (List 3 activities your dog finds rewarding)
